Kintsugi

Artist:           Death Cab For Cutie

Album Title:   Kintsugi

Price:           $30.99LP (w/CD)/$15.99CD

Death Cab for Cutie knew immediately that Kintsugi would fit perfectly as the title of their eighth studio album. “Considering what we were going through internally, and with what a lot of the lyrics are about, it had a great deal of resonance for us -- the idea of figuring out how to repair breaks and make them a thing of beauty,” says bassist Nick Harmer.

Kintsugi is the band’s first time recording with a producer other than their own Chris Walla. For Kintsugi, they worked with Rich Costey (whose production credits include albums by Franz Ferdinand, Muse and Interpol), recording at his Los Angeles studio Eldorado over the course of twelve weeks in the first half of 2014. “He was all in in a way that I don’t think a lot of producers are nowadays,” says Gibbard. “We couldn’t have landed on a better collaborator for this record. He accomplished what we’ve always attempted, which is to make Death Cab sound on a record how we sound live.”

Carrie & Lowell

Artist:           Sufjan Stevens

Album Title:    Carrie & Lowell

Price:           $17.99LP/$12.99CD

Carrie & Lowell sounds like memory: it spans decades yet does not trade on pastiche or nostalgia. Stevens's gauzy double-tracked vocals wash across the dashboard of long-finned, drop-top Americana, yet as we race towards the coast we are reminded that sunshine leads to shadow, for this is a landscape of terminal roads, unsteady bridges, traumatic video stores, and unhappy beds that provide the scenery for tales of jackknifed cars, funerals, and forgiveness for the dead. Each track in this collection of eleven songs begins with a fragile melody that gathers steam until it becomes nothing less than a modern hymn. Sufjan recounts the indignities of our world, of technological distraction and sad sex, of an age without neither myths nor miracle and this time around, his voice carries the burden of wisdom. Carrie & Lowell accomplishes the rare thing that any art should achieve, particularly in these noisy and fragmented days: By seeking to understand, Sufjan makes us feel less alone.

What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World

Artist:           Snowbird

Album Title:   What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World

Price:           $24.99LP/$15.99CD

The Decemberists released their 7th studio album, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, on January 20, 2015. It is their first full length studio album since 2011's The King Is Dead, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

With their two most recent albums, The Hazards of Love and The King is Dead, the songs flowed out of an overall theme. Entering the studio in May 2013, The Decemberists reversed that approach.

"Typically we book four or five weeks in the studio and bang out the whole record, explains singer Colin Meloy. This time, we started by just booking three days, and didn t know what we would record. There was no direction or focus; we wanted to just see what would come out. We recorded Lake Song on the first day, live, and then two more songs in those three days. And the spirit of that session informed everything that came after."

From the soaring, bittersweet first single Make You Better , to the ruminating ballad Lake Song , and anthemic closer A Beginning Song , What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World establishes itself as the Decemberists most varied and dynamic work to date, both musically and emotionally.

Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance

Artist:           Belle & Sebastian

Album Title:    Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance

Price:           $27.99LP/$14.99CD

Irony abounds in the title of Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, the ninth album by the Scottish collective Belle & Sebastian. It goes unstated that the record was released in an atmosphere not quite synonymous with peace, but the group unquestionably want to dance, spending nearly half of this lengthy record grooving to a neo-disco beat. To approximate the pulse of a mirror ball, Belle & Sebastian hired Ben H Allen, a producer best known for his work with the modern psychedelic troupes Animal Collective and Washed Out, a decided shift away from the exquisitely sculpted miniatures that populated B&S' two records with Tony Hoffer, particularly Write About Love. If that 2010 album found the band embracing their eccentricities and taking the time to whittle their quirks down to their basic elements, Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance finds the group stretching way out, twice taking as long as seven minutes to complete a cut and only once flirting with the three-minute mark. Surely, the grandest formal experiments are the longest tracks -- "Enter Sylvia Path" plays like a slyly decadent 12" mix and "Play for Today," featuring Dee Dee Penny of the Dum Dum Girls, is a duet with de facto leader Stuart Murdoch -- but even the relatively concise "The Party Line" bears a heavy four-four thump, and "Perfect Couples" percolates with polyrhythms previously unheard on Belle & Sebastian's records. Next to these brazen departures lie a few songs where flashy production tricks are grafted upon pleasingly familiar B&S forms (the hard swing and fuzz of "Allie," the analog whine on "The Power of Three," the Motown bounce of "The Book of You'), along with reassuringly meditative ballads and the remarkable "The Everlasting Muse," which takes a sharp left turn from jazz to woozy folk. This is the sound of a band that's growing fearless in middle age, and while the record occasionally does drag -- all those long songs push it over an hour, but the sequencing makes it feel even longer -- there's also a thrill hearing a band unafraid to stumble.

Run

Artist:           AWOLNATION

Album Title:   Run

Price:           $19.99 LP/$13.99 CD

Following a whirlwind two-year world tour in support of Megalithic Symphony, 2014 saw AWOLNATION withdraw into the depths of the California coastline to construct the sophomore effort. A culmination of the years following the release of the debut album, the 14-track Run was written, performed and produced entirely by musical architect Aaron Bruno. The end result is a finely tuned musical masterwork that is at times, and all at once, sprawling, atmospheric, exuberant, earnest and refined with moments of a signature aggressive unease. 'There is not one second on the record that hasn't been thoughtfully placed,' said Bruno. 'Every single element serves a purpose.'

Standout songs alongside the first single Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf) include the cinematic Jailbreak, the soaring anthem I Am, the title track Run, the euphoric Windows, the painfully vulnerable Headrest for My Soul, and the atomic rebellion of 'KOOKSEVERYWHERE!!!!'

Formed in Olympia, WA in 1994, Sleater-Kinney were hailed as "America's best rock band" by Greil Marcus in Time Magazine, and put out seven searing albums in 10 years before going on indefinite hiatus in 2006. No Cities to Love was produced by the band’s longtime collaborator John Goodmanson.

Policy

Artist:          Will Butler

Album Title:   Policy

Price:           $19.99 LP/$14.99 CD

Will Butler has been a member of the band Arcade Fire for over 10 years. This is his first release under his own name. Policy is American music—in the tradition of the Violent Femmes, The Breeders, The Modern Lovers, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, The Magnetic Fields, Ghostface Killah. And John Lennon (I know, but it counts). Music where the holy fool runs afoul of the casual world. Policy was recorded in one week in Jimi Hendrix’s old living room (upstairs at Electric Lady Studios). Jeremy Gara played drums; other musicians contributed woodwinds and backing vocals. Most everything else was played by Will. The song structures are traditional; the arrangements are clean. The music is experimental only in that it attacks consistency as a requirement for sincerity. The songs are angry, loving, joking, tired, honest, idiotic. They clash against each other but also fit and work together—as if a blind watchmaker made a Frankenstein watch that came alive and told extremely accurate time while having conflicting feelings about its creator. No, about creation itself. But then the watch makes friends with a talking rat, and they go on hilarious adventures until it turns out that the rat was dead the whole time. With a really good credits song—I mean, the whole soundtrack is excellent. You should check it out. Yours truly, Memphis Slim Blues Musician.

Strange Trails

Artist:              Lord Huron

Album Title:      Strange Trails

Price:              $21.99LP / $10.99CD

Lord Huron is a musical and visual project created by Ben Schneider. Originally a solo project, collaborators now include Mark Barry (percussion, vocals), Miguel Briseno (bass, percussion), Brett Farkas (guitar, vocals) and Tom Renaud (guitar, vocals).

Ben Schneider was born in Michigan and started playing music as a child, on his father's acoustic guitar. The senior Schneider wasn't a musician by trade, but he had learned a bit during his downtime on ships in the Navy. Schneider's father would bring the instrument out from time to time — most often on summer nights around the campfire up on Lake Huron — to strum and hum the songs he knew. After learning the basics, Schneider began his formal training in the school orchestra. He played upright bass and fiddled with many other instruments, both acoustic and electric, and began recording original music on a four-track cassette machine.

Schneider studied art in college and lived in France and New York before moving to Los Angeles in 2005 to pursue a career in the visual arts. Music was an ever-present pastime, whether through bands or personal projects. Passions often intertwined, and Schneider composed music for various visual art projects over the years. His work was continually inspired by his outdoor explorations, landscape, and water in particular.

In May 2010, Schneider travelled home to Michigan and spent a week on the shores of Lake Huron. For several months he had been writing songs and designing artwork in Los Angeles, though he wasn't sure exactly where his ideas were headed. There at the lake, where many of his formative experiences had come to pass, Schneider recorded the three songs that would comprise the Into the Sun EP. Like most of his work up to that point, the Into the Sun tracks were heavily influenced by places. Schneider had recently taken trips to Indonesia and Mexico, and the sights and sounds of those places had lingered with him. His return to Lake Huron helped these influences to coalesce. He released the EP online in June and dispersed a small number of CDs complete with the artwork he had been working on. With help from a post by San Francisco bloggers, Yours Truly, the songs quickly gained traction online and Schneider set to work recruiting musicians to help him translate the recordings into a performance. Lord Huron's first live show proper was in August 2010.

On November 4th, 2010, Schneider released his second EP, Mighty. The four-song recording received immediate attention from critics and fans, bolstered by an 8.0 rating from Pitchfork. Lord Huron's first official music video, for the single "The Stranger," was released in January 2011. The wintery video was conceived by the band and shot by Jacob Mendel in the same location where Schneider recorded Into the Sun.

The band toured heavily in the US throughout 2011, including performances at South by Southwest, Outside Lands and Lollapalooza. Mark Barry and Tom Renaud, childhood friends of Schneider, moved to Los Angeles to join Lord Huron. Miguel Briseno and Brett Farkas also originally hail from Michigan. The band has worked hard to recreate the densely layered recordings in the live setting. Principal in this effort was Mark Barry, particularly early on as the band was still forming. He plays several instruments during the course of a performance (often at the same time) and is a guiding force in the arrangement of the show.

Something In The Water

Artist:              Pokey LaFarge

Album Title:      Something In The Water

Price:              $19.99LP/$13.99CD

Pokey LaFarge makes original Midwestern music. With one foot deep in the heart of the American musical tradition and the other firmly planted in the present, he continually challenges the notion that tradition-bearers fail to push musical boundaries. An eclectic writer and performer, he incorporates elements of early jazz, ragtime, country blues, Western swing, and beyond, transcending the confines of genre to present a sound very much his own. Something in the Water follows on the heels of his last album, released on Jack White's Third Man Records, but comes with an evolution in sound. Treated with a heavier dose of catchy rhythms and traditional drum kit percussion throughout, the 12 tracks on Something in the Water see LaFarge's sound imbued with new life. Produced by kindred spirit Jimmy Sutton, Something in Water showcases Pokey LaFarge's peerless gifts as a songwriter, performer, and entertainer, and further solidifies his place at the forefront of American music.

Kindred

Artist:           Passion Pit

Album Title:   Kindred

Price:           $22.99 LP/$12.99 CD

Kindred, is the new album from Passion Pit. Kindred was written by Passion Pit creative force and frontman Michael Angelakos and recorded in New York City. The album was produced by Angelakos alongside longtime collaborators and co-producers Chris Zane and Alex Aldi, as well as Benny Blanco.

Kindred follows Passion Pit's 2012 hit Gossamer, which found the band selling out Madison Square Garden, appearing on "Saturday Night Live" and a special "Live on Letterman" performance, and playing at major festivals including Lollapalooza, Governors Ball, Outside Lands and more.

Angelakos' songwriting process for Passion Pit has always been to filter and reshape. Many sounds on Kindred that one would assume are synths are Angelakos' voice, manipulated by computers and pedals. Angelakos frequently repurposes sound: using top 40 signifiers for outré ends, crushing weird natural and synthetic detritus together into pop (Brent Katz, liner notes, 2015).

Angelakos' recent collaborations include tracks with Skrillex and Madeon.

The Magic Whip

Artist:           Blur

Album Title:   The Magic Whip

Price:           $39.99 LP/$15.99 CD

The new album from Blur, titled The Magic Whip, started life in Hong Kong when the band had an unexpected break in touring in May 2013. It is released by Parlophone Records on 27rd April 2015 - 16 years since 13, the band's last record as a four-piece. The recordings for the band's eighth studio album began in Spring 2013 at Avon Studios in Kowloon. Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree spent 5 days jamming together and carried on with their live dates while the recordings were put aside and the group finished touring and returned to their respective lives. Dave resumed his day job as a lawyer and Alex returned home to his farm in Oxfordshire from where he writes a regular farming column in The Telegraph and hosts the annual food and music festival The Big Feastival with Jamie Oliver. Graham, who has released eight critically acclaimed solo albums to date, continued to work on his own material and, in 2014, Damon released his Mercury-nominated debut solo album ‘Everyday Robots'.Then, in November last year, Graham revisited the tracks and, drafting in Blur's early producer Stephen Street (Leisure, Modern Life is Rubbish, Parklife, The Great Escape, Blur), he worked with the band on the material. Damon then added lyrics and the 12 tracks on The Magic Whip is the result.

My Morning Jacket has built a reputation as a group who consistently challenges the paradigms in which they are placed. From psychedelic to soul to classic rock and roll, My Morning Jacket's range remains steadfast throughout the band’s sixteen years. The Louisville quintet released the first of 6 albums in 1999 with their last two, 2008's "Evil Urges" and 2011's "Circuital" each receiving Grammy nominations - the latter debuting at number 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. On May 5, 2015, My Morning Jacket will release their seventh full-length album, The Waterfall. Recorded in Northern California’s Stinson Beach, they gladly took the inspiration that it offered and crafted a sparkling new album. The band features Jim James (singer/songwriter, guitar), Tom Blankenship( bass), Patrick Hallahan(drums), Carl Broemel (guitar, pedal steel, saxophone, vox) and Bo Koster (keyboards, vox). Known as one of the most engaging, eclectic & electric bands, in no small part due to Jim James' other-worldly vocals, they've become legendary for their live performances. The New York Times wrote this about the band, “…the new kings of expand-your-mind, religious-experience rock…”
